Every child deserves to show up to school ready to learn, grow, and feel confident. But for many students in our community, hunger stands in the way long before they ever reach the classroom. When a child does not have enough to eat, their cognitive, social, and emotional development can be deeply affected. This isn’t just about empty stomachs — it’s about missed potential, shaken confidence, and a daily struggle to focus. At Erin’s Angels of CNY, we ensure that children who rely on subsidized school meals continue to receive the nourishment essential to their growth and development — especially when school doors close for the weekend.
In the Phoenix Central School District, many elementary students quietly battle food insecurity. When meals are uncertain at home, hunger becomes an invisible barrier to learning. Students who skip meals are more likely to struggle with concentration, fall behind their classmates, repeat grades, and experience challenges with attendance. Hunger doesn’t just affect academics — it affects a child’s entire sense of well‑being. Research shows the impact clearly: Children who arrive at school hungry tend to have lower math scores, difficulty staying on task, and higher rates of behavioral challenges. Teachers often see the difference instantly on Monday morning.
About 14% of individuals living in food‑insecure households report that someone in the home goes without eating over the weekend. For children, that means long stretches — sometimes 48 to 72 hours — without steady access to meals. Over extended breaks like Spring Break, which can last ten days or more, the situation becomes even more dire. Without school meals to rely on, some families face impossible choices, and children feel the weight of food scarcity in very real ways.
Programs like ours change what Monday looks like. One study examining weekend food programs found that teachers noticed improved behavior, better attention, and stronger engagement among students receiving food packs. When a child is nourished, everything else becomes possible — learning, participating, connecting, and dreaming.
Here in our community, 11.5% of children in Oswego County are food insecure.*
Many of these students head home unsure of what — or if — they will eat before returning to school. No child should carry that burden.
Your partnership makes it possible for us to reach the children who need us most.
Right now, we work with an average of 130 students each week, ensuring they go home with enough food to feel secure through the weekend — and enough nourishment to return to school ready to learn. When donors, volunteers, and community partners come together, the impact is immediate and deeply felt. Your support doesn’t just fill a backpack with food — it fills a child with comfort, confidence, and the knowledge that their community cares about them.

If you’ve ever wondered what teamwork looks like with a side of pure joy—come watch the PCSD Meal Bag Crew in action. These legends turn a mountain of shelf-stable goodies into neat stacks of weekend fuel for students… at record speed and with ridiculous amounts of good vibes.
From assembly-line high-fives to “who packed the perfect bag?” bragging rights, this squad proves that service can be fast, fun, and full of heart. Every bag = a kid who heads into the weekend with dignity, comfort, and something tasty to look forward to.
To every volunteer who shows up, laughs hard, and packs even harder: you’re the heartbeat of this program. Thank you for making care feel like a party and impact feel inevitable.

Before Free Breakfast & Lunch was activated in Phoenix CSD, some students carried lunch debt. A cafeteria team member told us kids with a few dollars for an “extra” were being asked to put it toward their balance instead. Not okay.
An anonymous donor stepped up, and today we delivered $1,545.40 to Superintendent Chris Byrne and Food Service Director Patty Barber to wipe out the remaining debt for the entire district.
Even bigger: this is the second time in three years we’ve coordinated a full payoff. Combined with the 2023 effort ($8,465.13), our community has now cleared $10,010.53 in student lunch debt. That’s not just generous—it’s transformative.
This is what compassion looks like in Phoenix: removing barriers so kids can simply be kids. Thank you to our anonymous donor and to our amazing food service staff for caring for students every day. Let’s keep leading with love—and keep saying yes to equity for all.

We get a lot of testimonials… some break our hearts, some bring us to tears — and some just crack us up.
Like this one from a mom who's doing her absolute best to keep her growing kiddos full:
Can you relate?
Kids have bottomless stomachs — and when they’re growing, learning, and just being kids… they need fuel. Lots of it.
That’s why we do what we do. Because a full belly means more than just a meal — it means energy, focus, happiness, and the freedom to just be a kid.
So if this gave you a chuckle, let it also remind you:
A small act of kindness can literally help keep kids from trying to eat the furniture.
