Hunger can have lifelong consequences for children, making it more difficult for them to learn, play and connect with kids their age. And although children in every community in the country face hunger during the summer, rural communities are hit especially hard.
Proper nutrition is crucial for a child’s growth, development and overall well-being. When a child is hungry it causes significant psychological stress, depressive disorders and it increases the risk of other mental illnesses. This means when you provide a child with a meal you improve their mental health as well. Our summer program ensures that food still gets to children even when they are not in school. You can have a significant impact on a child's life by ensuring they have access to meals, reducing food insecurity and promoting their physical and mental health.
We are proud to announce a transformative partnership with United Way's "Ride United" program to address the issue of childhood hunger during the summer months. This innovative program utilizes Door Dash to ensure that vulnerable children have access to nutritious meals and snacks while school is out of session. Every Friday "dashers" will pick up weekend food bags and deliver them directly to families who have opted into the program.
During the academic year, many children from low-income families rely on school meal programs as a crucial source of daily nutrition. However, when summer break begins, these meal programs are often unavailable, leaving millions of children at risk of facing food insecurity. Recognizing this critical challenge, Erin's Angels and United Way have come together to make a positive impact on the lives of these young ones. The summer meals program aims to provide free weekend meals and snacks to children in need throughout the summer vacation. By leveraging the partnership with Door Dash the program will reach underserved areas, ensuring that no child goes hungry during the summer break.
"We believe that every child deserves a healthy and happy childhood. Yet, for many kids, summer can be a time of uncertainty and hunger," said Sheila Dion, Founder and Director of Erin's Angels. "We are thrilled to partner with United Way to make a difference in the lives of these children. Together, we will ensure that they have access to weekend meals and snacks, giving them the chance to enjoy their summer and return to school ready to thrive."
As part of the Summer Meals program launch, Erin's Angels is inviting community members, corporate partners, and concerned citizens to join them in their mission. Donations, sponsorships, and volunteer contributions will be instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of the program. Every dollar you give helps provide us with closing the summer meals gap. Please donate today. Hundreds of Central New York children are counting on you to take action!
