Our school district participates in the USDA's summer feeding program. Lunches are provided at Maroun Elementary for children up to age 18. The great thing about this program is that there are no income requirements so anyone can go. There are a few flaws, however which I will talk about now.
The first misconception is that this program is available for the whole summer. It's not. It typically runs for the month of July, and the first week in August. So, there is a gap of 2-3 weeks typically. Also, this program is great for people who live in the village and can walk there, or people with transportation. What I have learned in my partnership with the Food Bank of CNY is that transportation is the biggest obstacle for people in poverty. My solution to that is to have a summer food truck or van or mini bus or something like that to drive to the areas where it would be difficult if not impossible for those people to get to MAM. We would like to bring a bagged lunch and a snack for later M-F for the entire summer.
Also, we will include resources in our vehicle that can connect people with specific needs. Brochures from Oswego County Opportunities, Farnam Family Services and more will be available for our volunteers to connect people in need with services that can help! We need funds to purchase a vehicle, insurance, and food for this program. Do you know someone who can help? Please contact Sheila at (315) 399-6602.
